Topic: Concept of Pharmacology (Chapter- 1)

Pharmacology:

The word pharmacology is derived from Greek word “pharcon” that means “drug” and “logos” mean Study.

Definition:

  1. Pharmacology is the science that deals with the study of drugs and their interaction with the living systems.
  2. Pharmacology is a brunch of medicine which deals with all about drugs.

Brunches of pharmacology:

  1. Clinical pharmacology.
  2. Medical / therapeutic Pharmacology.
  3. Pharmaco-genetics.
  4. pharmacognosy.
  5. Toxicology.
  6. Pharmacy.
  • Clinical pharmacology:  Study of drug in human.

Subtypes or major types:

  • Pharmacokinetics.
  • Pharmacodynamic.

Pharmacokinetics:  It is the brunch of pharmacology which deals with absorption, distribution, biotransformation (metabolism) and excretions of drugs. In Greek  (kinetics means- movement).

Pharmacodynamics:  It is the brunch of pharmacology which deals with the effects of drugs and their metabolism of action.

  • Medical / therapeutic pharmacology: It is the brunch of pharmacology which deals with the use of drugs for treatment, control, prevention and diagnosis of disease.
  • Pharmaco-genetics: It is the brunch of pharmacology which deals with altered drug response due to genetic abnormalities
  • .Pharmacognosy: It is the brunch of pharmacology which deals with source, identification, purification and isolation of drug.
  • Toxicology: It is the brunch of pharmacology which deals with the over dose and its management.
  • Pharmacy: It is the brunch of pharmacology which deals with the preparation , quality control and dispensing of  the drugs.
